llm-kernel provides the foundational layer for building LLM-powered tools, agents, and servers in Rust:

Keeping the catalog fresh
The embedded catalog is frozen at compile time (via include_str!), so it only
advances when you bump the llm-kernel dependency. For always-current
pricing, fetch models.dev at runtime and overlay it onto the embedded catalog:

Cross-engine federation
FederatedSearch queries several AsyncVectorIndex backends (Qdrant, Elasticsearch, …) concurrently, applies a per-backend timeout so one slow remote cannot stall the query, and merges survivors. The default strategy is RRF because it is rank-based and therefore scale-invariant — heterogeneous raw scores (Qdrant cosine, Elasticsearch _score, TurboVec raw cosine) fuse correctly with no normalization. Behind the federation feature (add features = ["federation"] to your dependency).

A synchronous TurbovecIndex participates via the pure federate_results merge — search it directly and fold its list in alongside the async backends.
Local ONNX embedding (fastembed-rs)
44 models via ONNX Runtime — no API key, no network after first download.
Release-link caveat (#55).
embedding-fastembedstatically links a prebuilt ONNX Runtime archive that requires glibc ≥2.38 on Linux (ubuntu 24.04+) and a current MSVC CRT on Windows. Older baselines (ubuntu 22.04 / glibc 2.35) fail at the release link step —cargo checkstays green because it does not link, so the failure only surfaces atcargo build --release/cargo-dist. For those targets, enableembedding-fastembed-dynamic-linkinginstead and shiplibonnxruntime.{so,dll}alongside your binary. The two features are mutually exclusive (Cargo feature unification would otherwise silently disable the static path — #50/#55); acompile_error!enforces this.

Pass --baseline eval/baseline.json to compare against a golden snapshot — the CLI exits with code 1 on any metric regression. CI runs this automatically on every push and PR via the eval job.
