Every roundup of AI SEO agents scores features. None of them check the one thing a developer needs before committing: can you actually drive it from code, or is it a dashboard with an AI label on it. This list answers that per vendor, against the vendor's own repo or documentation, with the date it was checked. Snapshot: 2026-08-07.

Short answer

Four of the seven agents here can be driven from code today, and the gap between marketing and reality is wider than the category admits. Ahrefs archived its official MCP server on 2026-02-24 and redirects to a remote one. Semrush has no MCP server at all in its GitHub org — eleven public repos, none of them one. Meanwhile Search Atlas ships three MCP repos and a CLI, which is the widest code surface of any suite in this list; the reserve is that its OTTO module deploys on-page changes client-side, so you should verify what reaches the crawler before you trust the automation.

When none of the above applies: if you are not writing code against these tools, this whole distinction is irrelevant to you and the feature roundups serve you better than this page does. The list exists for people who intend to script the thing.

Why trust this? Every row was checked against a first-party source — a repository under the vendor's own GitHub org, or the vendor's own documentation — never against another roundup. The sources are in agents.csv with a checked date on each row, so you can re-verify any claim in under a minute. Where nothing could be found, the row says none found at check date rather than guessing. No scores out of ten appear anywhere in this repo, because nobody can audit a score.

Driveable from code today

Search Atlas — the widest code surface here. Three MCP repositories under search-atlas-group (MCP-agent, updated Feb 2026, 10★; searchatlas-mcp-server, Apr 2026; searchatlas-mcp-servers, Mar 2026) plus a Homebrew tap for a SearchAtlas CLI. It is also the only entry whose agent writes to your site rather than reporting on it — which is the point, and the risk. The 7-day trial is the cheapest way to point an MCP client at a real account and see what the agent actually does.

DataForSEO — dataforseo/mcp-server-typescript, 214★, Apache-2.0, runs locally or as a Cloudflare Worker. The most honest entry in the category, because it does not pretend to be an agent: it is the SERP, keyword and backlink data you build one on top of.

Nightwatch — official hosted MCP at mcp.nightwatch.io/sse, works with any MCP client. Read the plan requirement before you invest a day in it: the server is gated to Professional and above and is explicitly excluded from the Starter plan and the free trial.

Frase — publishes an agent endpoint at frase.io/agents. No public repository found at check date, so the integration surface is whatever the vendor documents.

Surfer — shipped a public REST API in June 2026. No MCP server found at check date, so you write the glue yourself. Fine if you were going to write glue anyway.

Not driveable, or no longer

Ahrefs — ahrefs/ahrefs-mcp-server, 99★, archived 2026-02-24. The maintainers redirect to a remote MCP server that needs no local setup. Either path requires a paid API key. Read this as a deliberate move to a hosted surface, not as abandonment — but the open repo is frozen.

Semrush — no MCP server. The GitHub org carries eleven public repositories at check date (a design system, ansible roles, a websocket proxy, a Claude Agent SDK browsing tool) and none of them is one. Third-party wrappers exist; none is vendor-maintained, which is a different risk profile entirely.

Only one row in this list rests on a marketing page. That is the number worth watching.

What this list does not claim

It does not rank these agents on output quality. Nobody can audit "how good is the AI" from the outside, and every roundup that puts a number on it is scoring vibes. It also does not claim the absence of an MCP server means a bad tool — Semrush is not worse at SEO because it has no MCP repo, it is worse for an agentic workflow, which is a narrower claim and the only one the evidence supports.

Deprecation moves fast in this category. A row checked in August 2026 may be wrong by October; the checked column exists so you can see how stale a claim is before acting on it.
