About

mcp for creating and maintaining changloges while using cursor

README

A language-agnostic Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for automatic changelog generation. Works with any codebase - JavaScript, Python, Unity C#, Go, Java, Rust, and more!

Features

  • Language Agnostic: Works with any programming language or framework
  • Version Tracking: Stores version in .changelog-mcp.json (no dependency on package.json)
  • Smart File Detection: Automatically categorizes files across different languages
  • AI-Powered: Uses LLM to generate natural, readable changelog entries
  • Framework Support: Special handling for Unity, React, Python, Go, Java, and more
  • Flexible Configuration: Easily customizable for your project structure

Quick Start

  1. Install the MCP server in your Cursor configuration
  2. Start coding - the system automatically detects new projects and initializes itself!
  3. Generate changelog when ready with analyze-and-prepare-changelog

That's it! The system automatically:

  • Detects your project type (Unity, Python, Go, Java, etc.)
  • Creates .changelog-mcp.json with optimal settings
  • Creates DOCUMENTATION/CHANGELOG.md
  • Sets up file watching for your language

Configuration Examples

Unity Project (Auto-Generated)

{
  "changelogPath": "DOCUMENTATION/CHANGELOG.md",
  "currentVersion": "0.1.0",
  "watchedExtensions": [".cs", ".unity", ".prefab", ".mat", ".shader"],
  "ignoredPaths": ["Library", "Temp", "Logs", "obj"],
  "significantPaths": ["Assets/Scripts/", "Assets/Prefabs/", "Assets/Scenes/"]
}

Python Project (Auto-Generated)

{
  "changelogPath": "DOCUMENTATION/CHANGELOG.md",
  "currentVersion": "0.1.0",
  "watchedExtensions": [".py", ".pyx", ".yaml", ".toml"],
  "ignoredPaths": ["__pycache__", ".pytest_cache", "venv"],
  "significantPaths": ["src/", "lib/", "app/", "tests/"]
}

Go Project (Auto-Generated)

{
  "changelogPath": "DOCUMENTATION/CHANGELOG.md",
  "currentVersion": "0.1.0",
  "watchedExtensions": [".go", ".mod", ".sum"],
  "ignoredPaths": ["vendor", "bin"],
  "significantPaths": ["cmd/", "pkg/", "internal/"]
}

Supported Languages & Frameworks

Language/Framework File Extensions Package Files Directories
JavaScript/Node .js, .jsx, .ts, .tsx package.json, yarn.lock src/, components/
Python .py, .pyx, .pyi requirements.txt, pyproject.toml src/, lib/, app/
Unity C# .cs, .unity, .prefab .csproj, .sln Assets/Scripts/, Assets/Scenes/
Go .go go.mod, go.sum cmd/, pkg/, internal/
Java .java pom.xml, build.gradle src/main/, src/test/
Rust .rs Cargo.toml, Cargo.lock src/, tests/
C/C++ .c, .cpp, .h CMakeLists.txt, Makefile src/, include/

Configuration Options

Core Settings

  • currentVersion: Current project version (stored in config, not package.json)
  • changelogPath: Where to write the changelog (default: CHANGELOG.md)
  • versionStrategy: "semver" or "calver"

File Watching

  • watchedExtensions: File types to monitor for changes
  • ignoredPaths: Directories to exclude (build folders, dependencies, etc.)
  • significantPaths: Important directories that indicate meaningful changes

AI Generation

  • defaultModel: "auto" (recommended) or specific model
  • allowPaidModels: Whether to use paid AI models
  • minimumScore: Threshold for automatic changelog generation

MCP Tools

analyze-and-prepare-changelog

Analyzes recent changes and prepares context for AI changelog generation.

{
  userPrompt: "Added user authentication system",
  triggerMode: "prompt-based",
  forceUpdate: false,
  timeWindow: 5,
  preferredModel: "auto"
}

write-changelog-entry

Writes the AI-generated changelog entry to your changelog file.

{
  changelogEntry: "## [0.2.0] - 2024-01-15\n\n### Added\n- User authentication system",
  modelUsed: "gemini-2.5-flash"
}

changelog-status

Quick status check of the changelog system.

{
  includeRealTime: true,
  verbose: false
}

initialize-project

Manually initialize or reinitialize a project (usually automatic).

{
  projectType: "unity", // "unity", "python", "go", "java", or "auto"
  force: false // Force reinitialization if files exist
}

Migration from package.json

If you have an existing Node.js project, the system will automatically detect your package.json version and migrate it to the config file. You can also specify:

{
  "currentVersion": "1.2.3",
  "versionFile": "package.json" // Optional: sync back to package.json
}

Automatic Project Detection

The system automatically detects your project type based on files in your directory:

  • Unity: Presence of Assets/ and ProjectSettings/ folders
  • Python: requirements.txt, pyproject.toml, or setup.py
  • Go: go.mod file
  • Java: pom.xml or build.gradle
  • Auto/Generic: Falls back to universal settings

When you first run any MCP tool, the system:

  1. Scans your project directory
  2. Detects the project type
  3. Creates optimal configuration
  4. Sets up the DOCUMENTATION/ folder
  5. Initializes changelog with proper structure

Advanced Features

Multi-Language Projects

For projects mixing multiple languages (e.g., Python backend + React frontend):

{
  "watchedExtensions": [".py", ".js", ".jsx", ".ts", ".tsx", ".css"],
  "significantPaths": ["backend/", "frontend/src/", "shared/"],
  "ignoredPaths": ["node_modules", "__pycache__", "venv", "build"]
}

Custom File Categories

The system automatically categorizes files, but you can influence this through path structure:

  • Put components in components/, src/components/, or Assets/Scripts/
  • Put tests in tests/, __tests__/, or files ending in test.py, test.cs, etc.
  • Put configs in files containing "config" or extensions like .yaml, .toml

Installation in Cursor

Add to your .cursor/mcp.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "changelog": {
      "command": "node",
      "args": ["path/to/changelog-mcp/dist/index.js", "."],
      "alwaysAllow": ["analyze-and-prepare-changelog", "write-changelog-entry", "changelog-status"]
    }
  }
}
