Installation

Perceptual Diff / Baselines Workflow

The tools/compare.js tool performs pixel-level diffs using pixelmatch.

First run (baseline creation):

  • If baseline does not exist, it is created and the tool exits successfully.
  • This allows you to approve the baseline before running assertions.

Subsequent runs (comparison):

  • Compares current.png against baseline.png.
  • Writes diff.png highlighting pixel differences.
  • Exits non-zero if percent-difference exceeds threshold (default 0.03 = 3%).

Best practice: Commit demo/baseline.png to the repo after visual approval.

CI/CD Notes

The .github/workflows/ci.yml pipeline:

  • Runs npm ci and npx playwright install --with-deps
  • Executes npm test on ubuntu-latest and windows-latest
  • Uploads test artifacts (screenshots, traces, videos) on failure

How to Activate an Agent in VS Code

Via Copilot Chat Panel:

  1. Press Ctrl+Alt+I (Windows/Linux) or Cmd+Alt+I (macOS) to open Copilot Chat
  2. Look for the agent/chatmode selector dropdown at the top of the chat panel (usually shows the current mode like "default")

🩺 Healer Agent — Auto-fix Failing Tests

When to use: A test is failing and you want Copilot to diagnose and fix it without manual intervention.

What it does:

  1. Runs failing tests with test_run / test_debug
  2. Takes a browser snapshot to see the current page state
  3. Analyses selectors, timing, assertions, and data issues
  4. Edits Page Object files and test specs to fix the root cause
  5. Reruns the test to verify the fix — iterates until green
  6. If the test cannot be fixed, marks it test.fixme() with an explanatory comment

Complete Workflow Example:

User: "The smoke test in tests/wesendcv.spec.ts is failing on CI. Can you debug and fix it?"

Healer Agent:
1. Reads test-results/results.json and finds the failure:

✅ DO:

  • Use Planner first: Always create a test plan before writing code. Saves time & ensures coverage.
  • Chain agents: Plan → Generate → Review → Test. Each agent's output feeds into the next.
  • Ask for edge cases: Planners excel at finding edge cases. Ask specifically: "What are the error scenarios?"
  • Let Healer iterate: If a test is flaky, give Healer multiple attempts. It learns from failures.
  • Review generated code: Always do a final code review, even for generated tests. Agents follow conventions but may miss nuances.
  • Commit often: After each agent completes a task, commit & push. Makes it easy to roll back if needed.
  • Use descriptive prompts: "Fix the login test" is vague. "The login test times out when clicking the submit button" is better.

  • Don't skip the review step: Code Reviewer catches 80% of issues. Always run it before merging.
  • Don't hardcode credentials: Agents will flag this. Always use tests/data/ for sensitive test data.
  • Don't use raw selectors: Let agents enforce POM. Selectors belong in Page Objects, not test specs.
  • Don't ignore agent suggestions: If Code Reviewer warns about a pattern, it's usually a real issue.
  • Don't over-test: 20 tests for one feature is overkill. Plan for happy path + 3-5 edge cases.
  • Don't run tests without agents: Use Healer for CI failures. Manual debugging wastes time.

  1. Batch similar tasks: Ask for multiple test scenarios at once. Agents are more efficient with batches.
  2. Reuse test data: Create comprehensive tests/data/ files first. Agents leverage existing data.
  3. Document selectors: If a Page Object has unstable selectors, add a comment. Agents respect comments.
  4. Version your test plans: Keep specs/ in git. Plans serve as documentation for non-technical stakeholders.
  5. Use mobile projects: When Planner explores a site, ask it to test mobile viewport too.

Troubleshooting Agent Issues

Issue: Healer can't fix the test, marks it test.fixme()

Solution: Check if the issue is environmental (network, server down). Restart dev server or API, try again.

Issue: Generator produces tests but selectors don't work

Solution: The website may have dynamic content. Ask Generator to use data-test attributes if available.

Issue: Code Reviewer is too strict / lenient

Solution: Review .github/skills/code-review/SKILL.md to understand the rules. Customize severity levels if needed.

Issue: Manual Testing checklist is too long

  • Page Objects: Keep POM methods focused on single actions; avoid god-methods.
  • Test Data: Extract URLs, credentials, and fixtures into tests/data/ files.
  • Artifacts: Enable traces and screenshots in playwright.config.ts for faster triage.
  • Baselines: Keep one baseline per viewport/OS if visual differences are expected.
  • Isolation: Tests should be independent and idempotent; avoid test-to-test dependencies.
  • No hard sleeps: Use Playwright's built-in waits (waitForSelector, waitForNavigation, etc.).
  • Negative tests: Always validate error paths and edge cases alongside happy paths.
  • Assertion quality: Avoid permissive assertions that always pass; assert clear expected outcomes.
  • POM boundary: Keep raw selectors out of *.spec.ts; place them in tests/pages/ only.
  • Data contracts: Keep URL and user keys consistent across tests/data/ and consuming specs.
